We had the pleasure of chatting with Denise. She’s been an RN for over 4 years and currently works in the ICU, where she’s found her true nursing passion. She loves baking, everything cheese, her cats, reading, sarcasm and recently took up running! Her sharp wit and love for cheese is why her Twitter handle is ‘sharpcheddar’ (which we thought was quite creative).

She’s grown by leaps and bounds in our profession and has shared her journey every step of the way on social media. Starting as the nervous new nurse to now the seasoned resource who loves to teach and educate. She shared her plans to pursue an advanced degree (which we also LOVED). We also learned she’s a former Podcaster!!

Here are the highlights from her interview:

  • She’s a Gamer (W.o.W.), owns three cats, a baker and a former dancer
  • Admits when she started this profession, she cried at work daily
  • Started in a renal stepdown unit before she landed in the ICU (a written 6 month plan)
  • Was an overachiever and knowledge seeker since the beginning of her career (enrolled in ACLS even though it wasn’t required)
  • Utilizes sarcasm a lot when doing her job
  • Actually became an RN after a series of events that started with her cat getting sick. Went from a ‘cat nurse’ to a ‘people nurse’
  • Has confirmed that your work environment and co-workers have great influence on your overall career happiness
  • Always remembers how it felt to be the new nurse when she precepts new orientees
  • Her involvement with C25K
  • She’s a former Podcaster! She ran a Podcast about the former TV show ‘Lost’
